more self plagarism, this time from a letter to the editor…
Thank you for Hayley Mick’s “Tales from 3-West” series about kids coming back from life threatening illness and injury at Bloorview Kids Rehab.
As Canadians are flocking to see “Sicko” and celebrating our health care system, today’s final installment is particularly poignant. In addition to months at her daughter’s bedside, through life threatening complications from chicken pox, Alegria Ordinario owes $90,500 to cover her daughter’s hospitalization costs. He daughter isn’t insured by OHIP because she became ill during the three month waiting period for new residents.
I am proud of our public healthcare system because of its inclusiveness. A three month waiting period for OHIP coverage is ridiculous. Illnesses and injuries can happen any time, and our public system needs to be there to support families in crisis, not act like an American HMO and tell them they’re not covered.
Will Premier McGuinty and Health Minister Smitherman make this right or allow new Canadians to continue without health insurance?

Bang! Great letter. (I guess I would be in the same situation if for some reason I decided to move back to Ontario!)

Thanks Paul. I wish you picked the letters the Globe published!
That’s exactly the spot you’d be in – I had a friend with a stomach bug who had to pay for his own treatment after being abroad. The cost was trivial, but could have been crippling – and he was born here and is a citizen, ffs.
If / when you come back the only way around the waiting period would be to buy private insurance or lie about where you’ve been living all these years. And the moustache, the stripy shirt and the baguette might make them suspicious…

We sell insurance for newcomers and visotors to Canada. Is Paul is coming home? Will his French plan cover him while he is here?
What do you think are the chances that Alegria Ordinario will actually end up paying the bill?

I’ll certainly be back sometime for a visit, probably not until fall. If I moved back to Ontario that’d be two steps back, but what with all the apartments in Montreal getting taken by successful indie rock bands, I might have no choice. I’d have to come up with some pretty complicated lies about the last 9 years or so. But of all the sacrifices I’d have to make, giving up this rock-hard baguette I’ve been carrying around under my arm for the last five years would be the worst of all.
As for Globe letters, if it’s any consolation, when they do print your letter, they often edit it into something you would never willingly put your name to, so at least you don’t have to deal with that.
