hoi marco,

gefeliciteerd met je stuk op de caravanlist.

I think Marco contributed very interesting thoughts in his article S top hop. The last months I also had the call from Sans Titre (to S top after Genua ) in my head. That was obne of the reasons I nearly went to Genua (for the first time I would have been to a antiglobalisation tophop event- although I demonstrated against G8 in Munich 1992 and Koeln 1999, & EU in 1997 amsterdam and koeln 1999). But also the fact that Berlusconi and his (post?) fascist friends govern / terrorise Italy made me wanna go. However, in the end I didn`t.

At a discussion in from the BN (basic democratic network) I asked people what they thought of the ST proposal. Most people didn`t think that Tophoppen had been usefull, but that now is the time to go back to our (work)places and attack capitalism overthere. I think it`s remarkable NGO`s (even big ones) are tophop minded nowadays and so is the SWP and his comrades in other countries. While anarchists/autonomous groups do quite a lot of the infrastructure to prepare a Tophop this is barely recognised by the media (and NGO`s?) and so it could turmn out that anarchists are only seen at a tophop when they use. And attraccts the media, so the tophop will be mentioned in the news and the goodies , the NGO`s will get more credit from the public (from the part of the public that feels like change now).

However, we might see some change, but it looks like a social demcratic change: less neo-liberalism, a little bit more state involvement. At least in Holland some winds are changing like this. But NO, thats not why anarchists were active in the movement even before seattle (in the carvan f.e and joined in the MAI campaign and PGA). Nor did anarchist all this work to prepare ground for SWP etc (which only shows up at these big demonstrations fter Seattle but doesn`t organise one - well I could be wrong with these facts or there could be more nuance, but it looks like this to me).

anarchists often were the first to take the next step into the struggle (they played quite a big role in the start of the movement - or am I wrong?). So why not (be the first to) to quit this movement (like de Fabel van de Illegaal) or quit organising events which have become too predictable, too violent and dangerous for us without having a direct goal. I mean, what could be the succes when the G8 stops coming together in this arrogant way ? When you defend succesfully (unfortunetaly this must often be done in a militant way ) a very important squat or a factory from closing down (like Forge Clabeq in Belgium) you might show the public : resistance can be helpfull and might bring succes. But when anarchists etc draw out of this movement, I think we have to do it with a positive message like change of strategy/ tactics. And make it very very public, like Sans Titre proposed (if Im not wrong about this). We can do more than be used by others like big NGO`s and the SWP and its clones.

Jeroen
