The World Wide Wrench

Wow, the battle for the web didn't last very long. It got mall-ified in seconds. Nonetheless (and we know it has become a cliche), the web has provided some pretty awesome alternatives to the mall, from the Free Software Foundation, to independent media centers, to online organizing networks such as tao. Still, what with Microsoft, CNNAOLTimeWarner, and all, the WWW could use a bit of Hacktivism and Cyberdisobedience. What's cool, is that we've got more 14 yr olds then they do.

Anyway, on a completely unrelated note, here are some interesting exercises, that you can work on in computer class.

Exercise 1

There are plenty of scripts for script-kiddies out there. Write an interface called wrench.exe which allows the average Winblowz user to install a DoS script on all their computers at work, or on public library terminals. It should not require breaking into other computers, but just run on the user's computer. Make it so user friendly that anyone can install it on any machine.

Exercise 2

Construct a peer-to-peer client/server which allows wrench.exe to coordinate itself with other users (a wrench network). Allow gpgp signed commands to be sent through the network to coordinate times (e.g. monthly), and sites (e.g. MSN).

Exercise 3

Allow users to vote on which corporate sites are the nastiest, and then encrypt the result of the vote. Write a subroutine, so that on the first of every month, the network launches a DoS attack against the site that the users voted for.

Exercise 4

Write a subroutine so that the wrench network can be upgraded, by sending a gpgp signed message through the network.
