Anarchist Golfers Vow to Disrupt the G8 in 2005
Posh golf resort a fitting location for G8 summit
In anticipation that the 2005 G8 Summit will be held at the posh
Gleneagles golf
resort, we are
pleased to announce the formation of the PGA - The Peoples' Golfing Association (not to
be confused with the Professional Golfer's Association, or Peoples' Global
Action).
In response to growing resistance to the policies of the G8,
the summit has been held in increasingly more isolated surroundings.
Next year, the eight rulers
plan to fortress themselves
off from reality in the plush surroundings of Gleneagles.
The luxurious club has long been the playground of the well-connected and
privileged, and is widely viewed as an amusing and revealing location
for the G8 summit.
People from across the U.K. and beyond are vowing that the
well-tended lawns of Gleneagles will not be a protest-free zone.
The surreal bubble in which the elite have retreated will be
punctured.
The PGA will be holding the Peoples' Open Golfing Tournament during the G8
summit, and plan to be playing golf on the sumptuous greens of Gleneagles
during the G8 schmooze-fest.
The tournament is open to all freedom loving individuals who reject
everything the G8 stands for (except golf). The golfing event promises
the opportunity to brush shoulders with influential and dapper
anarchists from around the world. It goes without saying that golf
skills are not required. In fact, golf skills may even be frowned upon.
The anarchist golf course will feature eight holes, one for each of the
rulers in attendance. Hazards will include a large sand-trap in the
shape of Iraq, and a pond in the shape of Guantanamo Bay. The PGA golf tour
will not be sponsored by Nike. Making divots in the well-manicured and
pesticide-fed lawns will be actively encouraged.
The isolated location of the 2005 summit will make it particularly
vulnerable to the blockades of protesters. The PGA
advocates
shutting down the G8 photo-op. We are one of many autonomous groups
across the U.K.
who form the Dissent Network.
We encourage others to form autonomous golfing blocs for participation in the PGA Gleneagles
tournament. Pictures of some members of the Cambridge chapter of the PGA are available here.
The PGA is currently seeking funding for the Gleneagles tournament. If you
can rustle up a donation please contact us.
